Rembrandt's wife Saskia was the daughter of the Mayor of Leeuwarden, Friesland, who was meeting with William of Orange on the day that William was assassinated. William of Orange, often called "The Silent," led the Dutch revolt against Spanish rule that began in 1568 and lasted for eighty years, until Spain formally recognized Dutch independence in the Peace of Münster of 1648.
After Saskia died, Rembrandt did not remarry because it would have meant giving up the income from her inheritance.
