Notes

(De) eethoek click to hear 2 ('dining area') translates literally as 'eating corner.'
(De) ijskast click to hear (ice-cabinet = 'fridge') is of course a word from the days that horse-drawn carts delivered blocks of ice to the houses of the rich - but it's still the common word for the electric version. The more correct word is (de) koelkast click to hear
(De) diepvries click to hear 2 '[deep-freeze] freezer' - it can also be used as the adjective 'frozen' for food items.
(Het) ontbijt click to hear is 'breakfast.' (Het) ontbijtbordje is just a name for a certain size of plate. It can be used at any time of the day.
There is a word (de) mok click to hear 2 for 'mug, large cup' but it's not used much anymore. The common word is (de) beker click to hear 2
Dutch has two words for 'bowl:' (de) kom and (de) schaal. The difference seems to be that a schaal click to hear 2 is more shallow, while a kom click to hear 2 has higher edges.
English and Dutch have the exact same spelling for (de) thermometer click to hear but note the differences in pronunciation. The melody is different, the stress is not in the same syllable.
Deksels! click to hear ('lids') is also a very mild curse.
Dutch uses the English word 'cake' for something like Banana Bread or Pound Cake. Cake like in Birthday Cake is (de) taart click to hear - a one-person serving is (het) taartje /or/ (het) gebakje click to hear
'Gloves' is handschoenen click to hear - 'mitts' is wanten click to hear ; still I prefer the word ovenhandschoenen click to hear for 'oven mitts,' even though they are mitts.
(De) wekker click to hear as in (de) keukenwekker ('kitchen timer') is 'alarm clock' in the bedroom.
Ik werd wakker van de wekker click to hear ('I was woken up by the alarm clock')
(De) zandloper click to hear ('hourglass') is literally 'sand-runner.'
(Het) blik click to hear is 'can, tin, tin can' - (de) blikschade click to hear - minor car body damage after a crash.
(De) blik is also the Dutch word for 'view.' (De) blikopener click to hear is 'tin can opener,' but can be used ironically for something that gives you another or a better view of things. In 'High School' I subscribed to a magazine called De Blikopener.
Note the different meaning of 'blik' with 'de' and 'het.'
(De) kurkentrekker click to hear ('corkscrew') translates literally as 'cork-puller.'
