Like most strong verbs with an A in the simple past tense, that A is 'short' in the singular, but 'long' in the plural

Horen click to hear 2 'to hear' is weak verb, and its simple past tense and past participle have D-endings:

more zien  and horen: examples of usage and related words - another approach

kijken - to look  / luisteren - to listen

Dutch and English have zien  - 'to see' and kijken  - 'to look, watch' - and next to that horen  'to hear' and luisteren  'to listen.'
Zien  - 'to see' and horen  'to hear' mean you're aware of, you're noticing sensations reaching the eye or ear, while for kijken (naar)  - 'to look (at)' and luisteren (naar)  'to listen (to)' your attention is more focused, the sensory organ is directed to something. Other languages may have different ways to describe this.
