Als de meester de rapporten uit zou delen

(If the schoolmaster would hand out report cards)

Onvoldoende voor je vlijt en je gedrag

((they would say) failed for diligence and behavior)

Schorre kelen, lege glazen, vuile borden

(Hoarse throats, empty glasses, dirty plates)

Had de wereld niet iets nuttigers verwacht

(Was the world not expecting something more useful)

Zijn we d'r vandaag wel wijzer op geworden

(Have we grown (lit. become) wiser today?)

Hebben wij wel aan ons levensdoel gedacht

(Did we think of our life's goal?)

Want daar in de hoek zit een ijverig student

(Because over there in the corner is a diligent student)

Die heeft geen plezier in plezier

(Who takes no pleasure in pleasure)

't Is duidelijk dat hij zijn lessen al kent

(It's clear he already knows his material (lit. lessons))

Zijn enig vertier dat zit hier

(His only pleasure is located here)

We zijn met zijn voorbeeld wel blij

(We're happy to see his example)

Maar houden zijn tempo niet bijbijhouden

(But can't keep up with him (lit. with his speed))

Lege glazen, vuile borden, schorre kelen

't Is het einde van een doordeweekse dag

(Het) leek zo makkelijk je dagen in te delen

(It looked, seemed so easy to organize your days)

En het maandgeld leek een vorstelijk bedrag

(And the monthly allowance seemed a royal sum)

Is de toekomst wel voldoende overdacht

(Has the future been sufficiently considered)

Want het uitzicht is ellendig kort geworden

(For the outlook has become miserably short)

En het is zo'n mooie roeping die ons wacht

(And it's such a beautiful calling that's awaiting us)

Want daar in de hoek zit een ijv'rig student

Die heeft al een meisje gevraagd

(He has already asked a girl - to marry him? for the ball?)

't Is duidelijk dat hij het leven al kent

(It's clear that he knows [the] life already)

Hij is zogezegd al geslaagd

(He has, so to say, already graduated)

We zijn met zijn voorbeeld wel blij

Wat kan hij daar in de hoek ons eigenlijk schelen

(What do we care about him there in that corner)

Hij die straks in een bureaustoel zitten mag

(Who'll later (lit. be allowed to) sit in an office chair)

Schorre kelen, lege glazen, vuile borden

Zijn voor hem en zijn gezin niet weggelegd

(Will not be on for him and his family)

Als je ziet hoe hij een burger is geworden

(If you see [what a petit-bourgeois] how bourgeois he has become)

Kwam hij nog niet eens zo schitterend terecht

(He did not find (such) an excellent position)

Want straks in die hoek zit diezelfde student

(For later that same student in that corner)

Voor huiselijke taken gereed

(Will be ready for household duties)

't Is duidelijk dat hij zijn plichten al kent

(It's clear he already knows his duties)

Niet morsen met as op het kleed

(Don't spill ash on the carpet)

Wij hielden zijn tempo niet bij

(We couldn't keep up with him)

Maar 't laatst en 't best lachen wij

(But we('ll) laugh last and best)

En dat wij uiteindelijk toch misschien

(And finally yet perhaps we)

Het laatst en het best zullen lachen

Geven wij U nog voor 't laatst eenmaal het beste advies
